We're introducing a new certification at IMH, created for practitioners who want to deepen their understanding of health coaching and develop the skills involved in helping clients make meaningful, realistic changes in their lives.

Developed and led by IMH graduate Kate Nguy, this six-month program brings together motivational interviewing, behavior change, client communication, and a distinctive approach to coaching with the menstrual cycle in mind.

And because coaching is something you learn by doing, you'll have opportunities to put these skills into practice through live training, peer coaching, reflection, and feedback.

Our inaugural cohort begins November 2026, and it's open to everyone: IMH students and graduates, and practitioners who are new to IMH.

Knowing what to recommend is one thing. Helping a client navigate change is another.

Think about some of the situations that come up when you're working with women on their health.

A client understands the recommendations you've discussed, but she's struggling to follow through. She wants to make changes, yet every time you check in, the same obstacles are still there.

Another client has tried so many different approaches that she's become discouraged. She's overwhelmed by everything she thinks she needs to do, and another list of recommendations probably isn't going to help.

Or perhaps a client becomes emotional during a session, and you're trying to figure out how to respond thoughtfully while keeping the conversation productive and within your professional scope.

These are situations where dedicated coaching skills can make a meaningful difference.

Understanding behavior change, asking purposeful questions, recognizing ambivalence, and collaborating on realistic goals can help you approach these conversations with greater skill and intention.

And just like the other professional skills you've developed through your education, coaching is something you can continue learning and refining.

What does it actually mean to coach someone through behavior change?

A client might understand the relationship between chronic stress and her menstrual cycle, but that doesn't mean she can easily reduce the demands on her time.

She may know that consistent meals would be helpful, but her work schedule makes that difficult. Or she may have spent years trying to change certain habits and developed a lot of frustration along the way.

In these situations, offering another strategy may not be the most useful place to start.

Health coaching provides a framework for exploring what a client wants, what she's finding difficult, and what changes feel possible within the reality of her life.

Inside the certification, you'll develop skills in several important areas:

Motivational interviewing
Learn how to use open-ended questions, reflective listening, and other evidence-informed communication techniques to explore a client's own motivations and reasons for change.
Behavior change
Understand established models of behavior change and how factors such as motivation, opportunity, capacity, and environment can influence a client's ability to develop new habits.
The coaching relationship
Explore how to structure sessions, listen effectively, recognize ambivalence, and support clients in making informed decisions about their own health.
Collaborative goal setting
Practice helping clients identify priorities and develop realistic goals that reflect their circumstances rather than simply following a practitioner's preferred plan.
Professional boundaries
Understand the distinctions between coaching, health education, consulting, and therapy, including when a referral to another qualified professional is appropriate.

These methods are useful whether you're preparing to see your first clients or looking to refine an established approach to client work.

Health coaching with women's physiology and lived experiences in mind.

Kate Nguy

What makes this certification distinctive is how Kate has brought together established coaching methodology, women's hormone health education, and her training in Menstrual Cycle Awareness.

The program begins with your own menstrual cycle.

You'll explore different ways to track and observe your cycle, reflect on patterns you notice, and consider how your needs and experiences may change throughout the month.

This isn't about assuming every woman experiences the same patterns or prescribing a particular way to live during each cycle phase. It's about developing body literacy and learning how to introduce cycle awareness thoughtfully into coaching conversations.

From there, the curriculum explores how to apply coaching methodology across several interconnected areas:

Menstrual Cycle Awareness

Using cycle tracking, reflection, and individualized patterns to inform conversations about health, goals, and daily life.

Behavior change and the nervous system

Understanding how stress, internal expectations, and nervous-system responses may affect a person's experience of change, while respecting the boundaries of health coaching.

Whole-person coaching

Considering sleep, nutrition, movement, relationships, stress, life stage, and other circumstances that influence a client's health and well-being.

Professional scope

Integrating coaching with your existing education, communicating your role clearly, and recognizing when additional professional support is needed.

The result is a coaching education that takes women's health seriously without reducing every experience or decision to hormones.

Enrollment is open until November 6. The first cohort is limited to 30 students.

How does this certification fit with the Practitioner Certification?

The Women's Hormone Health Practitioner Certification and Women's Health Coaching Certification are two distinct educational programs, each with its own focus.

Women's Hormone Health Practitioner Certification logo

Women's Hormone Health Practitioner Certification

Develops your understanding of menstrual and hormone health, including physiology, symptom patterns, clinical reasoning, assessment, and practical application with clients.

Women's Health Coaching Certification logo

Women's Health Coaching Certification

Provides dedicated training in coaching methodology, motivational interviewing, behavior change, client communication, and the structure and practice of coaching sessions.

If you're already an IMH practitioner, you're bringing substantial women's health education into this certification. The coaching program gives you an opportunity to develop another area of professional expertise and consider how these approaches can work together in your practice.

If you're new to IMH, you don't need the Practitioner Certification first. The coaching program begins with your own menstrual cycle and teaches the women's health context you need for the coaching work.

And if you've already completed a health coaching certification elsewhere, you may recognize some of the foundational methods. The difference here is the opportunity to study and practice them within the context of women's health, with Menstrual Cycle Awareness woven throughout the curriculum.

Want the deeper hormone health education?

The Women's Hormone Health Practitioner Certification covers female physiology, symptom patterns, common conditions, labs and clinical reasoning in twelve modules. It's the companion to this program, and many students take both.

Explore the Practitioner Certification

You'll spend time actually coaching.

There's a reason we've made practical experience such an important part of this certification.

You can study motivational interviewing, learn the principles of behavior change, and watch an instructor demonstrate a coaching session. But having those conversations yourself is a different experience.

What do you do when a client gives you a one-word answer? How do you respond when she becomes frustrated or changes her mind about a goal? When is it useful to ask another question, and when might it be better to stop talking and listen?

Throughout the program, you'll have opportunities to practice these skills, reflect on your approach, and receive feedback.

Here's how the learning process works:

  1. 1

    Learn the methodology.

Work through recorded lessons covering coaching principles, techniques, and practical applications.

  2. 2

    Reflect on what you're learning.

Complete module reflection questions and exercises that help you examine the concepts in relation to your own experiences and future client work.

  3. 3

    Practice with other practitioners.

Participate in interactive live training, small-group exercises, and independent partner coaching sessions. You'll experience the process from both the coach's and client's perspectives.

  4. 4

    Give and receive feedback.

Reflect on your sessions and exchange feedback with peers to identify what worked well and where you can continue developing.

  5. 5

    Demonstrate your skills.

Complete the program's required assessments, including written, knowledge-based, and practical components.

The program combines recorded education with live teaching, coaching exercises, and opportunities to ask questions. Some live participation and independent partner coaching are required to graduate, while additional office hours provide optional support.

Live calls and peer practice

5 calls

Content Teaching Calls

These calls take you deeper into key topics from that month’s modules, then give you the chance to put the skill to work. You’ll be partnered with another student to practice the coaching skill being explored and receive feedback from your practice partner. It’s one of the most direct ways to build confidence in applying what you’re learning.

3 calls

Coaching Integration Calls

Each Coaching Integration Call welcomes an established coach as a guest speaker. They’ll share the knowledge, experience, and techniques behind a specific coaching skill they’ve developed in their own practice. These calls widen your perspective beyond a single teaching voice, so you can see how experienced coaches approach this work and consider what you want to bring into your own.

Optional

Office Hours

Office Hours give you space to bring your questions about the module content released that month. Maybe a concept didn’t quite land, or you’re wondering how it applies to a client situation you have in mind. This is your time to ask, get clarification, and leave feeling clearer about the material. Office Hours are optional, so you can join whenever you’d like extra support, with no formal teaching or skills practice to keep up with.

5 sessions · Required

Peer Practice

You can study a coaching conversation, but holding one is a different experience. At the end of your first month, you’ll be partnered with another student, and the two of you will arrange five practice sessions at times that work for you both. Each session focuses on an assigned coaching skill. You’ll each take a turn in the coach’s chair, then reflect on the experience together. All five sessions are required for certification.

To graduate, attend at least 6 of the 8 Content Teaching and Coaching Integration Calls. Office Hours are optional, and all five Peer Practice sessions are required.

Enrollment is open until November 6. The first cohort is limited to 30 students.
